Soft Pastel Workshop - 8/9 November

Learning To Paint Seascapes In Pastels

At my studio, in Portishead, Bristol, UK

Saturday 7th November at 12.30 - 15.30 and Sunday 8th November 12.30 - 15.30

I’ll be offering 6 hour tuition to small groups, to be held in my studio and split across 2 days. Lessons will be limited to a small group of just 5 students, and students will have access to all required materials, so no need to bring art supplies. I’ll provide loan of premium branded pastels and pastel pencils, and well as use of premium pastel paper (uart 800 grit).

During the workshop I will teach you how to paint a small seascape. I will provide use of the reference photo. The workshop will start on day one at 12.30, where I will take you through an initial demo on how to start the seascape. Students will then start on their own piece, and I will spend the time giving each of you one to one time to help and support your work. Day 1 will end at 15.30, by which point students will be about halfway through their painting.

Day 2 will start the following day at 12.30, where I will demo the final stage of the painting. Students will then use the rest of the time to work on their own painting and again I will be providing one to one support to the students. The lesson will finish at 15.30.

Lesson Content

·        Sketching out with pastel pencil

·        Blocking colours and building up layers

·        Application and use of colour

·        How to blend verses mark making

·        How to correct mistakes

·        After the painting is finished – fixing, storage, framing advice

·        General advice – pastel brands, paper brands, pastel pencil etc
